We are proud to have sponsored a motor racing legend’s unforgettable first IndyCar race
Citi Private Bank was thrilled to sponsor Fernando Alonso’s stunning debut in Sunday’s Indianapolis 500. Formula One™world champion driver, Fernando had never before driven an IndyCar nor raced on a super-speedway circuit. He nevertheless showed why he is considered one of motor racing’s greatest-ever drivers with a performance that commentators have described as “brilliant,” “superb,” and “adding to the legend of his career.”
The ‘Indy 500’ is one of the world’s most challenging and prestigious motorsports races, covering 500 miles in front of live crowds of more than 300,000. The event is considered part of motor racing’s ‘Triple Crown’ of most iconic races, alongside the Formula One™ Monaco Grand Prix™ and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Fernando famously won the Monaco Grand Prix™ two years running and has ambitions to become only the second-ever driver to complete the Triple Crown.
Fernando began the Indy 500 from the second row, in fifth. He then electrified spectators by surging from ninth place at one point into first. He led the 200-lap race for 27 laps and achieved the fastest average lap-time of any driver. During yet another breath-taking advance to the front of the pack, his Andretti Autosport car unfortunately suffered engine trouble, denying him what might have been the perfect ending to a glittering first race. In recognition of his achievement, he was named Sunoco Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year, voted for by members of the media.
“We are absolutely in awe of Fernando Alonso’s Indy 500 debut,” said Peter Clive Charrington, Global Head of Citi Private Bank. “The incredible skill and determination he displayed will remain with us forever and we are immensely proud to have sponsored him in this race. Citi shares the same values Fernando has demonstrated throughout his career such as commitment, tenacity and the continuous drive to deliver excellence. Enabling progress is at the core of Citi and we will continue to cheer passionately for Fernando in his quest to reach the pinnacle of motor sport.”
