During these difficult and uncertain times, it is vital that we allow ourselves some regular moments of reflection and repose. Given the power of music to bring about such moments, Citi is proudly partnering with the world-renowned Philharmonia Orchestra to bring you a selection of musical interludes.
This week’s performance comes from Mahler’s Third Symphony. It is Mahler’s attempt to portray the entire cosmos through music and find humanity’s place in it. Here are the final moments of this remarkable journey, which ends on an unmistakable note of hope and affirmation.
Mahler uses a text from Friedrich Nietzsche earlier in the piece, which we feel captures the message of this music, as much you can in words:
“the world is deep,
and deeper than the day has thought.
Deep is its pain —,
joy — deeper still than heartache.
Pain says: Pass away!
But all joy
seeks eternity —,
— seeks deep, deep eternity!"
We hope that this performance inspires you as much as it did us.
